The Reality of Fruit Juice

“100% Fruit Juice”, you’ve seen them in the health food aisle before.
You might think this beverage constitutes a nutritious drink, but that’s not necessarily true. In terms of caloric and sugar intake, you’re not doing much better than a can of soda.
Here are some quick facts:
A 12 ounce can of Coca Cola contains
140 calories
39 grams of sugar
A 12 ounce bottle of orange juice contains
153 calories
27 grams of sugar
While the orange juice contains more vitamins than the soft drink, you’d be faring much better eating the raw fruit itself. Processed juices strip away the skin and pulp aka the most nutritionally dense parts of the fruit. Not to mention you’re missing out on the fiber content when choosing to drink your fruit instead of eating it.
