Are Smoothies Good for Weight Loss?

Smoothies are often associated with weight loss, but how helpful are they really?

Switching to a liquid diet to lose weight is nothing new. But downing pureed vegetable soup is a little less than appealing to the average person. A fruit smoothie made of healthy, whole ingredients is far more colorful and appealing.

With products like the Nutribullet gaining popularity, it would seem that smoothies and juices have become a relatively popular diet fad. But will they help you lose weight?

As with all diet trends, the answer is complicated. The nutritional value of your smoothie will depend on what ingredients you’re using. If they contain a high amount of sugar and calories you may end up setting yourself back.

Furthermore, some people might find pureed or juiced fruit to lack the filling quality of whole fruit, this is one issue with consuming juices.

However, if you find smoothies to be a filling meal substitute then go right ahead and blend. Just be mindful of how many calories are in your ingredients. You don’t want your morning beverage clocking in at more calories than a solid breakfast.

Choosing low-calorie and fiber-rich ingredients will help keep you full and avoid unessesscary caloric intake. Protein supplements can also help make your smoothie more satisfying.
